DAVID S. WARE QUARTET
Renunciation

[Aum Fidelity, www.aumfidelity.com]

In the linear notes to his latest quartet release, David S. Ware explains the title, "The experience of SELF or ATMA happens only by the grace of God in whatever form. Wisdom comes only from God or pure consciousness. The SELF stands alone, whole unto itself, totally uninvolved in relativity. This is true renunciation." This concert dating back to Vision Festival in June of last year was supposed to be the final appearance of David S. Ware's Quartet in the US. Whether to regroup or to distance himself from himself, Ware decided to take a well-deserved break. After all, his quartet had been active in one line-up or another for the last two decades. Joining Ware this time around are the trust-worthy pianist Matthew Shipp and the solid rhythm section made up of bassist William Parker and percussionist Guillermo E. Brown. Shipp is strong as usual in unravelling a string of solid underpinning motifs that he's allowed to unroll on a few of the tracks. Listen as he duels with Brown's multi-faceted rhythms on "Renunciation Suite I". He carries a similar motif over to part 3 of the same suite. When things slow down for a minute or two, Shipp is all over the map. Parker's wonderful sense of timing is evident everywhere, especially when he digs deeper with his elongated arco work. Other than that, his fingers are popping the strings until his fingers are bloody sore. The pacing is absolutely crazy. Not to take anything away from the other members of the quartet, this is Ware's time to shine. Ware just wails. Whether this is an invocation or a soliloquy for a dead friend, we'll never know. What matters is his burly tenor tone is heard everywhere. The way he manipulates and etches those furious blows is stupendous. The others are right there with him accompanying his ferocity every single step of the way. What a beautiful way to say goodbye to an audience that gave you so much!
