Nublu Records founder, keyboardists/saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin comes out with two new projects, each one being as different from the other as night is from day.
"Our Theory" amasses the talents of five musicians - Ilhan Ersahin playing sax and samples, trumpeter Erik Truffaz, guitarist/keyboardists Thor Madsen, drummer Jochen Rueckert and bassist Matt Penman. Let's be honest, this isn't any sort of an improvised jam session but an in-the-studio post-production job. Sure, Ersahin jammed with Truffaz and then their common love for music brought in the other members, but it's key to remember what these musicians played live to tape is not the result that was assembled afterwards. Funny thing is, though tweaking was done afterwards, the music still retains a vibrant, live feel. Personally, Erik Truffaz's outstanding, pointed trumpet work makes the session what it is. With shades of mid 70's Miles, when his trumpet shouts, you feel like the recording becomes more vibrant and life-like. This is not to discount the work of the other four members in the band. Bassist Matt Penman gives off a heavy rhythmic backbone, while Jochen Rueckert's drumming is unfortunately relegated to heavy cut'n'paste modifications. Thor Madsen's guitar playing is heavily helped by the sustain pedal, which gives some of these numbers a psychedelic feel. Ersahin is more than capable of giving off rousing motifs on his sax but it's the editing process that gets top marks. Whatever he did in the studio afterwards deserves top marks. The quintet plays as good in the virtual world as they would in a live setting, which makes this a real plus.
After using the talents of Norah Jones, N'dea Davenport, Saul Williams and U-Roy, Ilhan Ersahin now moves onto vocalist Marla Turner, who graces Wax Poetic's latest project "Copenhagen". I've not yet heard the other Wax Poetic albums ["Brasil" and "Istanbul"] but each is supposed to represent a taste of the geographical area. "Copenhagen" apparently mirrors the big-city feel, which is why I suppose we have a dreadfully lifeless tune like "NYC", where Marla Turner whines about being in the Big Apple. Turner is one of the album's big disappointments. Not only are her vocals drab, they're also whiny and lifeless. Add to this a less-than-lifelike rhythm section [drummer Jochen Rueckert - who is usually quite good in a jazz context and bassist Jesse Murphy], uninspired guitar work from Thor Madsen and Ilhan Ersahin's less than convincing keyboards, lyrics that are less than compelling and the place falls in under the weight of its own seriousness. Perhaps it's the mix of vocals and the rock-heavy music that tries too hard to sound organic [when it's not] that doesn't fit. Perhaps next time around, Wax Poetic should feature solely instrumental music. It remains to be seen whether the other two parts of this project are better than the initial part.
