EARTHMONKEY
Be That Charge

[Beta-lactam Ring Records, www.blrrecords.com]

What to say about a project that tries as it may to outdo Butthole Surfers during their glory days? Nurse With Wound collaborator Peat Bog returns with a glorious 2 CD opus "Be That Charge" that takes him on a path even further into weirdo-lama land. Peat Bog played and recorded all music on these two CDs. In fact, the first 300 copies, come with a bonus disc "Discobalistic", but more about that later. Earthmonkey's music is part Psychic TV circa their acid-house phase, part early Coil, large part Butthole Surfers and lots of loud little mushroom sprinkles on top. I don't know what to make of the elongated beat-box, guitar-drenched piece like "Funhouse" and can't quite decipher the reality behind the psychedelic-drenched "When She Watches Television", but the beautiful thing, none of this is supposed to make sense. The 22 minute long "Scaccia Pensieri" reminds me of a long Ann Magnuson speech done with aid of some pretty toxic mushrooms, while "Echo Base" sees the band get into some beats that falter, stutter and fall under their own lightheartedness. Disc two continues in the same vein of mind-alteration, with "Be That Charge Again'", a harsh guitar-screaming, noise-making machine. "Sapphire Wave" switches gears and takes the listener on a mind-altering trip full of samples, clicks, voices, dub-beats and percussive wonders. The album ends with a twisted tune named "Sister Marble Gazer", where a ton of saxophones, guitars and beats from hell conglomerate into one big void. But wait, just when you think the nightmare has come to an end, we get the bonus disc. "Discobalistic" is where Earthmonkey truly shines and in fact they've left some of the best material for last. With beats more defined, and rhythms that are completely out of this world, the EP is a walk [make that a run] through Bog's philosophy on life [whatever that philosophy may entail]. To be honest, the recording quality is cleaner, the means and methods utilized to put the message across are more defined and the overall result much more concise. Running at a bare 23 minutes, the music satisfies, satiates and quenches the most severe of thirsts. Now where did I put that bong pipe?
