MAX NAGL, STEVEN BERNSTEIN, NOEL AKCHOTE, BRADLEY JONES
Big Four Live

It was hathut owner Werner X. Uehlinger who suggested to saxophonist Max Nagl that he familiarize himself with the music of Sidney Bechet's 1940's quartet. That quartet at the time consisted of bassist Wellman Braud, guitarist Carmen Mastren and cornetist Muggsy Spanier. Nagl's quartet was composed of the leader on alto saxophone, trumpet player Steven Bernstein, guitarist Noel Akchote and bassist Bradley Jones. Their self-titled album from five years ago proved to be a blast to my ears. Unsuspecting and coming really out of thin air, Big Four were as great at delighting the senses as they were at tickling the ear drums. Their sense of melody and swing was paramount. Likewise on this live recording [taken from Jazzfestival Willisau in 2005], the quartet rallies hard to convince the most stubborn listener what they're playing is effortless and carefree. Sure, this is a romp through history books, but the listener must honestly ask themselves whether this is a bad thing? Not to my ears. The album features more than half of the same numbers that were included on the debut release. In fact, if anything the ensemble's music feels less restrained than it did on the preceding recording. On the studio recording, certain tracks felt somewhat regimented, here they sound more vibrant and alive. Bernstein shows fine restraint on "Big Four", which also features a killer anti-climactic section that features Nagl on alto. To my ears, it's guitarist Noel Akchote and his contrasting styles that add fine colouring to the mix. Check him out on "Muddy", as he delivers some vicious blues riffs or on "Monx" as he's juxtaposing his heavy riffs, caught in the middle of a blasting war of Nagl and Bernstein's barraging onslaught. Jones is heavy on melody and has an added task of trying to pounce extra hard to make up for an absent percussionist. High on melody, swing and bouncing with joy high up to the heavens, this is one album that continues to reap in rewards with time.
