ROBERT VINCS
Devic Kingdom

No matter what instrument you choose, a solo album is like stripping naked in front of your audience. Australian saxophonist Robert Vincs is no different. While his Fairlight sounds were used by people like Thomas Dolby and Kate Bush, he moved on to bigger and better things. Presently, he lectures in Saxophone, Improvisation and Music Technology at Victorian College of the Arts. "Devic Kingdom" could almost be considered a solo effort, there is one other musicians that had a heavy hand in the project - multi-instrumentalist Garry Greenwood. It's Greenwood that fills the spaces with interactive electronics and Max processing. It's Greenwood that adds thick layers of leather horn to the mix. Vincs splits his time playing saxello, Korean bone flute and some tenor sax. The best pieces are ones that are free of percussive electronic environment. If anything, the tenor solo "Not far from Hanging Rock (for BB)" is masterfully executed, if only for the fact that Vincs is playing purely solo. The wails are direct and the echo emanating from the environment surrounding him is breath-taking. When he moves to the saxello on the next track, the mood changes from vibrant and joyful to a mournful atmosphere. While Greenwood accompanies Vincs on leather horn, the duo's sounds mesh into one great big mass. Vincs' tenor solo on "Mantra" is once again full of zest and fervour, though it's a shame that it lasts just under the two minute mark. Take away some of the percussive elements evident on some of the pieces, and "Devic Kingdom" could've been a thrilling solo record. As it stands, it's simply good.
