ANTHONY PATERAS
Chasms

Composer and performer, Anthony Pateras in some sense meant his latest opus "Chasms" to be a tribute to Ligeti. He says: "GL's works from the 60s were revolutionary in the way they emulated "electronic" sound via purely acoustic means. I love the cognitive dissonance of listening to an orchestra play broadband clusters that sound nothing like an orchestra in Atmospheres, for example. I love it the other way around too - electronic music with instrumental virtuosity: Pita, Hecker/Tone or Robin Fox come to mind, not some lazy faker hitting the space bar." Three years in the making, the recording showcases prepared piano in all its magnificent glory. Not unlike Keith Tippett or Cor Fuhler, Pateras shakes, rattles and rolls the strings for all they're worth. Having performed the piece in a multitude of venues - cellar in Lisbon, train workshop in Wagga Wagga, Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, the piece underwent a variety of changes. Pateras now presents the piece after the evolutions have been applied. "Residue" and "Descent" concern themselves with presenting a layered effect. If anything both pieces make it sound as if more than one person was playing pianos simultaneously. The incessant clickety-clack motifs rise and falter every few minutes. There are sections when one hears distinct sound of metal bowls banging away at each other and plopping on the strings. In other sections, I hear what could be whooshing cymbals posturing on top of the strings and against the walls of the piano. The title piece is much more relaxed in nature, with every click and plonk being carefully pre-determined. The echo rings on for many seconds every time a percussive ring comes out of the piano. The richness of the piece as a whole can't be underestimated. Rich and satisfying to the last drop, this is one album that grows on the listener with time.
