VOLUME
Aeter

[Ninth World Music, www.ninthworldmusic.com]

Saxophonist Mikolaj Trzaska is no stranger to playing in various trio and quartet formats with German, Swedish and Norwegian musicians. Peter Brotzmann and Peter Uuskyla have been on that list for a while. Add to this bassist Peter Friis Nielsen [who has already played with him in North Quartet] and percussionist Peter Ole Jorgensen and you're ready to rip some eardrums to shreds. Disguising themselves under a very fitting name Volume, the band stands firm and proud on their rambunctious music. This is improv music as tough as it gets. Trzaska is as fervent as ever. The windy tenor blows keep on coming. Once he rips into a phrase, he stays with it until a new portion of the program opens up a different opportunity for the band. Rhythm section is perfectly matched. Nielsen is unforgiving on bass, playing scales and matching rigid finger popping routines with Jorgensen's imaginative rhythm propulsion. I find best moments to be direct confrontation between Trzaska and Jorgensen. As they rally up a storm, each one challenges the other to play at greater heights, to use an even more forceful routine. No improvised routine is perfect and neither is this one. One thing I do wish for is that some of the pieces were expanded somewhat. This move would allow the band to go into further unexplored directions. Otherwise, "Aeter" is a strong album from a trio that I'm hoping will record other worthy material in the future.
