SINEAD O'CONNOR
Theology

[Koch Records, www.kochrecords.com]

Sinead O'Connor never shied away from controversy. From her infamous ripping up of the picture of the Pope on an episode of Saturday Night Live fifteen years back, to her choice of musical paths [reggae, traditional Irish music, folk, rock, pop], the woman has the guts to stake out her very own, unique battlefield. The newly released double album "Theology" is no exception. Divided into the "Dublin Sessions" [stripped down, stark sounds] and "London Sessions" [which features a full band], O'Connor continues her spiritual quest through music. Both sessions feature an almost identical line-up of songs and I'm not one to be surprised by her choice of covers. Her acoustic version of "Rivers of Babylon" is striking, poignant and moving, while her acoustic interpretation of Curtis Mayfield's "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is stunning in its ability to move. While the acoustic disc is rich in its imagery [it's just O'Connor and Steve Cooney on acoustic guitars], the "London Sessions" explode with another sort of power. Compare the same "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue" with its acoustic counterpart. Here, O'Connor sounds more pissed-off, and disgruntled, while a thick rhythm section pumps out the beat. "I Don't Know How to Love Him" [from "Jesus Christ Superstar"] is sung in a completely haunting and original way. The way she gets those high notes out is perfectly timed and well executed. "Whomsoever Dwells" sees O'Connor going back to her beloved dub. Deep pounding bass and echo-filled vocals are all perfectly arranged. Finally, another take of "Rivers of Babylon" closes the proceedings in a deeply moving way. There's even a fairly decent guitar solo thrown in to accentuate the woman's spiritual height. An amazing album that shows a reflective and highly spiritual side of O'Connor's music. It's good to see that none of her dexterity has been diluted.
