SIX TWILIGHTS
Six Twilights CD/DVD

[Own Records, www.ownrecords.com]

I get weary of split CD/DVD releases but in the case of Six Twilights' eponymous debut, the thing actually works. The project comes from Aaron Gerber [of Portland outfit A Weather] but it's not just a solo project. In fact, along with Gerber, we also have the fine vocals of Liz Isenberg and Zoë Wright. The audio portion is akin to a more drowsy Robert Wyatt [think back to "Old Rottenhat"] with instrumentation that is even more dreary and lifeless. Floating collages of guitars, bass, accordion and even some piano filter through the dense fog. If this is ambient music, then it's sounds that are supposed to be telling a story in a soft, hushed manner. The vocals are oftentimes just single parts of a word or repetitions on the same phrase. Endless splicing techniques ensure that many times the gorgeous vocals are just cut mid-way through, before resuming their journey. Isenberg and Wright interchange vocal subtleties many times throughout the record. The record as a whole feels like a powerful meditation, though in fairness, you're not sure whether it's a prayer for loneliness, despair or hope. So diluted is the message, and so greatly is it masked over, the whole thing drowns under the weight of its seriousness. It's almost as if on its way to producing a viable product, the means to getting to the goal became more viable. Nonetheless, the drone of the recording is powerful in its own right. DVD gives off an equal amount of warmth as the CD with gorgeous images to boot. Very soothing and warmly strange, it is simply great in setting an unforgettable mood. Strangely alluring in its simplicity and haunting quality, Six Twilights has started off with a powerful whimper.
