HANS KENNEL MYTHA
How It All Started

[hathut, www.hathut.com]

The sound of an alphorn is quite radical. If you haven't seen one, the Swiss alphorn is a good 12 to 13 feet in length, made out of wood and must probably weigh a ton. The bottom of the horn [where the sound escapes from] rests on the ground, while the top is held by the players. Alphorn has no keys, which means each one produces one tone. Give five people an alphorn and you're flying high off the ground. To be fair to Hans Kennel and his Mytha band of musicians that he put together in 1990, the sound is quite versatile. More versatile than you'd imagine from such ominous and huge instruments. If anything, the sound of Hans Kennel, Carlos Baumann, Marcel Huonder, Bill Holden and Stefan Schlegel is much more akin to a drone than an all wind or brass ensemble. Other instruments [flugelhorn and buchel] are used on the album, though only very sparingly. The ultimate sound Mytha achieve is that of a slowly moving machine. It takes a while to get the cranks oiled, but when you do, the energy keeps on pumping. The cyclical motion of the horns is subtle and the variations are even more subtle to distinguish. Close listening is advised to catch the tiniest nuances, and believe me, there are tons of those. Though all of this material was already released in the early nineties on two out-of-print records ["Mytha" and "Mytha 2" - though I must admit, I do love an out-of-print Unit records release of Mytha horns as well], this compilation is still worth picking up. If only to educate yourself in the rich heritage of the Swiss Alp musicians close at work, you must get this record.
