COLD BLEAK HEAT
Simitu

[Family Vineyard, www.family-vineyard.com]

On their second album "Simitu", supergroup Cold Bleak Heat continue their maddening ascent into improvised music territory. Consisting of saxophonist Paul Flaherty, percussionist Chris Corsano, bassist Matt Heyner and trumpeter Greg Kelley, the quartet rage and spew out some of the finer moments in recent free music history. Recorded in one day in August 2003, this music signifies the best cries of Ayler, the most abandoned Ornette you've heard and the most rapid Brotzmann in one single session. Of course, besides Flaherty, there are three other players in the band as well. Chris Corsano's percussive attacks sound more structured than anything on the record. His mid-simmering heat is honey to my ears. Especially when he attacks the others on par with Flaherty, you can clearly hear their creative juices flowing. The tension between the sax-drum line-up is ever present. It's only when Kelley steps up on hollering trumpet blasts that the other two pull back a little. Bassist Matt Heyner sounds like he's working in tandem more with Kelley's fervent blows, than he is with Corsano's contained percussive fury. Flaherty is full of squelches, wails and usual concoctions of energy and playful spirit. Best thing about the quartet is everyone gets heard in the shuffle. Though the music is dense in many parts, individual voices are permitted enough room to maneuver through the thick swamp. Gutteral, satisfying but most of all, brutally honest to its very core, "Simitu" represents a new idiom in total freedom. As Christina Carter's liner notes point out, "Simitu - A space a place of being human. Physical emotional spiritual mental?"
