DIMENSION X
Dimension X

As a kid I remember staying up late on Sunday nights and listening to classic radio plays. "The Shadow" and "Inner Sanctum" were my favourite but "Dimension X" was not far behind. Creating a powerhouse trio, guitarist David Chalmin, bassist Massimo Pupillo and drummer Chris Corsano knew what they were doing. Dimension X was born to pay tribute to the cult sci-fi radio show of the same name. Not unlike a radio drama, the album progresses in a series of chapters. Clocking in at just over 13 minutes, the epic "Almost Human" resembles the actual radio play most closely. It develops slowly, with the narrator building up tension. Corsano's over-the-top drumming gets a relief on the piece - as he narrates heavily on the cymbals. All the while Pupillo [you'll probably remember him from the Italian nut-outfit Zu] gives off some heavily resounding bass lines. Chalmin [who's also responsible for electronics and editing] plays it loosely, which fits in well with the narration as the tension builds more and more. After the narration is disposed of, the next track "The Empire Never Ended" starts off like a burst of pure lava. Pupilo and Chalmin fight each other off for supremacy of the strings, while Corsano's pulse is unrelenting and doesn't let up for a second. Molten fury and scorching harsh garage rock that doesn't hold anything back then turns quiet for a few minutes on the next track as more narration is introduced. While the bursts of furious rock blasts are cathartic to say the least, my only wish is the trio divided the record into two equal halves - a more subtle radio play rendition and a blast of furious energy to top everything off. Otherwise, Dimension X is a fine reminder of all the abandoned radios most of us have sitting collecting dust in our basements.
