MICHIO KURIHARA
Sunset Notes

[20/20/20, www.20-20-20.com]

For those who love Japanese freak-out psychedelic sound, Michio Kurihara is a stunning perfect ten. Having played guitar for groups like Ghost, White Heaven, The Stars and Damon & Naomi, a couple of years ago, Kurihara released his first solo album on Japan's Pedal Records. Fast forward two years, Damon & Naomi's label 20/20/20 have just re-issued this little heard of gem. There's much to love on this album and there's lots more than just simple psych freak-out that everyone loves so much. Sure, there are snapshots of blues feedback, such as the brief, fuzzy "Canon in "C"" (C is for Cicada)" or the Black Sabbath inspired grungy riffs on "Do Deep-Sea Fish Dream of Electric Moles?" More than just pure guitar, the music can turn quite mellow and downright lovely. "Wind Waltzes" for instance features the ethereal vocals of Ai Aso, who on a whim of a cloud and accompanied by a synth and skeletal guitar sings a lovely [dare I say], wistful tune. Ai Aso returns on "The Wind's Twelve Quartets", which recalls Led Zeppelin's glory days, though I'll take Aso and Kurihara over Page and Plant any day. With a dreamy haze, and a hard knocking consistency, along with willingness to split its time between freak-out sessions and dreamy, hazy images of days gone by, "Sunset Notes" stands alone as a winner in its own matchless category.
