If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking

[Compunctio, www.compunctio.com]

If solo piano records were more common, we'd probably find the cure for cancer and stop all violent conflicts worldwide. There's something unmistakably soothing and peaceful in the sound of a composed piano piece. It's as if the tickling of the ivories went directly to the person's heart and affected the deep insides. In the list of solo piano records comes along a double disc from a new Swedish label. "If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking" is a moving tribute to the lyrical power of the piano. In June 2006, two Swedish pianists - Gösta Rundqvist and Andreaz Hedén met for a live piano concert. Each gave a half-an-hour solo recital in front of an audience. Rundqvist is heard performing six numbers, five of these are originals while "Wedding March" is a Steve Swallow number. One thing I can't get over is how superfluous and gut-wrenching this music is. The more I listen to it, the more I'm drowning in tears. Gentle crescendos and utterly moving passages are heard right through. The lyrical quality is very direct. Nothing is guessed at. The much younger Hedén gives an equally poignant performance. Starting off with a haunting ten minute "Chant", he is more concerned with the finality of the sound, rather than the prettiness factor. Sure, the lyrical aspect is still heard, but it's the experimentation aspect that is more evident. Check out his "Moments 1", where he's tapping inside of the piano. Deadly silence is broken off by the gentlest of taps, which grows and rises up while retaining a sense of the dramatic. Whereas Rundqvist allotted his recital to the power of the lyrical, Hedén is much more interested in ways that silence and pauses play in his music. Convincing at every turn, this is absolutely stunning music.
