MATT McCORMICK
Very Stereo

[Marriage Records, www.marriagerecs.com]

Filmmaker Matt McCormick was awarded for his films on a good number of occasions. "Very Stereo" is his debut in the world of music. Marriage Records calls this an ambient collection but I beg to differ. Just because much of the sounds on the record are of subdued nature doesn't automatically categorize the music as being ambient. McCormick is smart in putting simple sounds and samples to some of the films he'd made over the last few years. Cheaply made - usually on analog four tracks or older computers - the sounds remain truly authentic. If anything, some of the tracks are simple drones ["Blue Remains Grey" where a simple reference tone generated by computer software was used] or "Elevator Muzak", which features a thick sound of a loop recorded from a transistor radio. "Refrigerator Dance Musics" features an endless drum beat looped over a radio and a slowly dying refrigerator [picture sounds of flying guitar feedback]. A real winner [and the only piece worthy of ambient moniker] is the album's nearly 15 minute closer "Ride a Wave to Tomorrow's Sunset". Placid guitar sounds are manipulated to create a still landscape of ethereal beauty and wonder. Very little changes throughout its duration and best thing is, it was meant to work as an endless loop, giving the piece even more roomy flavour. If you define ambient to mean dull, then you're barking up the wrong tree. If you redefine the genre to mean atmospherics, then you're on the right team. Absolutely compelling, "Very Stereo" is miles and miles away from ambient boredom.
