SUN
I'll Be The Same

[Staubgold, www.staubgold.com]

In a state of suspended allegory, multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi whips out drone magic on his latest record. What is supposed to be a dark twin to the "Grapes from the Estate" release from a few years back turns out to be a slow-pouncing nightmare. If you thought "Suspension" was a tricky album to sink your teeth into, wait until you hear this one. Purposeful turtle-pace conglomeration of sounds and development that has little to do with melodic structure, Ambarchi understands the pulse to be the key to the heart of his music. Plucking of guitar strings, low rumbling piano chords accompanied by off-the-wall bells, glass harmonica and percussion. Perhaps not the most unusual choice of instrumentation but nonetheless, effect is unforgettable. The key to everything is pacing. Your ear will be screaming for development to occur, when nothing real of substance looms around the corner. Perhaps just a layer of two of bells is carefully added, while the plucking on the strings reverberates in your mind's ear or maybe the palette is made livelier with the addition of blues-drenched strings that careen on top of the rhythmic mud pie. Soundtrack to a bad dream from last night that comes alive in the day. Dangerous and frothing at the mouth, though very cultured and carefully cultivated to shake your hand when you pass it on the street.
As if to confuse his fan-base, Ambarchi moves away from the chilled, nightmarish world straight into summer days with his duo Sun. Their second full length features Ambarchi on guitars and producer / musician Chris Townend on six of the most perfectly arranged and breezy songs this side of summer. If anything, they're even more loose and more coherent than first time around. The duo's love for pop-rock shines loudly enough, though in the most subtle of ways. Melancholic and infectious as hell, these six little pop tunes are guaranteed to put a smile on your morose face every time.
