TBA
Size and Tears

[Max Ernst, www.max-ernst.de]

Wrapped up in a thick veil of mystery, Georgia-based Natalie Beridze [aka TBA] delivers a highly ambitious enterprise. Spread over 2 CDs, "Size and Tears" apparently describes an entire arc of the universe from a musical perspective. My biggest fear is that two CDs are not quite enough for TBA. If she could, she could make an entire box set of music to help her mission along. Produced along with her long-time musical partner Thomas Brinkmann, the project is split up in quite a logical manner. One CD is more conceptual and minimal, while the second one is more song-oriented. Spruced up with a variety of voices, babbling, whispers, chants of "Girl from Ipanema", the conceptual CD also includes a healthy dose of abrasive piano which is spiced up with electronics, along with field recordings. Like a death march or a soliloquy for someone close, the music is transcendental, peaceful, though brimming with an implicit dark side. This dark side is revealed through the sequencing of individual segue-way, in the way the samples are thrown in. The variety throughout the first CD is phenomenal, while the language Beridze employs is equally fascinating. Shying away from electronica, she has firmly moved into a more experimental medium, where sparseness rules. While the second CD emphasizes the traditional song form, it appears to have a thousand different preoccupations as well. From operatic through to ambient and electronic, Beridze knows the way to a listener's heart is through a ton of variety. When she does sing, as on the haunting "Topeka Exists", her voice is like a calm wave of soothing air on a humid summer night. Don't expect much of the music to make all the sense in the world. These sounds are highly personal and very unique to Beridze's unique world. "Size and Tears" is no doubt an exhausting journey but certainly one worth taking.
