STEVE PETERS
Three Rooms

Composer/musician Steve Peters found a niche for himself in making music out of lifeless objects, as well as in using found sounds to best effect. "Three Rooms" represents three distinct approaches he has used in recent times to manufacture sounds. Much in the same way Steve Roden makes sounds out of stuff that surrounds his environment, Peters takes a similar approach on "Delicate Abrasions". Dedicated to Roden, all sounds on the piece were born out of surfaces and materials of a building. These materials included nails, dust, sliding door, concrete, metal, glass and wood. Overall, the piece has an explicitly peaceful aura. Scrapes and rustling of nails, and metal, concrete and wood against the speaker only serve to create a rather chilling aura. Commissioned for an art gallery, as a 12 channel site-specific installation, which was built complete with six stone/steel listening benches, the piece must've been all the more awe-inspiring in its physical incarnation. Following piece "Center of Gravity" is centered on Peters' breath, which is processed with EQ, reverb and delay. During his collaboration with artist Susan York, each breath was performed and processed in real time. Silences that are apparent in the piece are meant to break down each breath as a separate, all-inclusive composition. Listening to the piece, one can't help but to compare the breath to an awe-inspiring hurricane-scale, gale-force wind. Addition of reverb and processing make this electro acoustic work sound more like a passing freight train, which is barrelling down a steep hill at great speeds. Final piece is one called "Mountains Hidden in Mountains". Its premise is simple enough. One strike of the densho at a Zen Buddhist temple [here played by Johanna Callard] takes place. Then, the reverberations are recorded. Resulting drone that is produced goes on ad infinite, in fact reaching frequencies as low as 40 Hz. Though by the very pinnacle of the piece, your ears tend to beg for mercy, in the end, as the deep, bass rumbling settles in over your body, you find this is still a very absorbing piece. "Three Rooms" turns out to be an engaging album that shows the wealth of Peters' approach to sound installations.
