MUHAL RICHARD ABRAMS
Vision Towards Essence

[PI Recordings, www.pirecordings.com]

Musicians on these two recordings have been frequent guests of the Guelph Jazz Festival over the past few years.

Trio M is a new conglomeration of pianist Myra Melford, bassist Mark Dresser and percussionist Matt Wilson. Weaving between composition and true improvisation, these three players take on the tasks on equal terms. As in a live setting at this year's Guelph Jazz Festival, on record, "Big Picture" sees a true community of equal-minded spirits playing what is communal music. While much of the music sounds disjointed, on subsequent listening sessions, one finds quirks and hints of melody. Perhaps not the sort of melodic vision that early Melford albums were brimming with [compared to say "Alive in the House of Saints" and "Jump"], there is still enough here to keep the listener interested. Dresser's particular sharp-edged finger picking and pizzicato work is enough to shred the other players to bits. While Wilson's percussive skills are impressive, I find as in a live setting, he is too busy being sharp-edged. His responses to the other players don't add up to the sum, but then again, maybe that's the entire point. Angular and certainly sharp-witted, the music on Trio M's debut rides a wave of assurance and top-of-the-shelf musicianship.

Pianist Muhal Richard Abrams needs no introduction, though I'll say I find it shocking this live solo record has sat on the shelf for nearly a decade. For whatever reason, it's great to finally be able to experience this record from a perspective of time. Recorded at 1998 edition of Guelph Jazz Festival, the record sees Abrams at the pinnacle of his might. Completely improvised, his hour-long concert is an exhaustive romp through history and present of jazz piano. His phrases during the performance are decisive, cutting and always crystalline. You can almost hear him plan out his thought process as he ever so delicately intones the harmonic movements. Progression of the pieces is organized logically, though who am I to say what logic is according to Abrams. Never one shying away from clusters; he delivers a healthy dosage and then follows these up with a ballet-quality dance on the keys that is equally awe-inspiring as it is powerful. All the audience could do that night in Guelph was listen intently to the master's passionate piano revelations. Absolutely stunning!
