Someone once said that as long as you get maximum amount of pleasure, size is truly irrelevant. With that said, below are a few suggested listening slabs of pleasure that arrived in the format of a 3" CD.
Oslo duo Beneva vs Clark Nova [actually Rudi Simmons and Frank Benjamin Finger] bask in the haze of an atmospheric daze. Made up of two tracks, their "Flotsam/Jetsam" EP is an illusionary, hallucinogenic mist. Full of didactic clicks, breaths, warbles, guitar string melodies and subtle hints at actual melodic progression, this duo opens the window and lets a ton of fresh air into a stale room. Gradual pacing allows a silent movie atmosphere to prevail, while underwater gurgling samples serve to soothe the mind and soul. Once this all too brief release is done and over with, one thing that is engraved in your head is an underlying tinkling of melodies and the hints of beauty hidden deep beneath the surface.
Described as "21 minutes of instrumental sherbet dib dab" by his label, UK native Danny Norbury is shrouded in mystery. Considering the details of his life are horridly lapse, we're left with the music at hand. "Dusk" is composed of six pieces of drab [though never lifeless] string and piano based music that is lovely [though never flowery] and intensely enjoyable. In that Prozac kind of way, Norbury comes across as a musician with distinct vision of clouded, autumn days that last forever; of flowers that have perished due to incoming winter; of birds that have all flown south. Like a premonition or a long-lost memory, "Dusk" is haunting in its totality and its purpose right here and now. Essential listening. Beg, buy or borrow a copy now!
Brighton collective known as Vole have released a brief "Vole Radio1" EP and one can't make exactly heads or tails of it. To be fair, the improvisational quality on these fifteen minutes of music is fine by itself. We're accosted by various woodwinds, percussion and strings but totality of it all is somewhat disjointed. Before one can grasp the direction of a particular piece, it's gone. All recorded at a variety of radio broadcasts, seven pieces presented are like brief glimpses into someone else's dreams [nightmares?]. Some are intense, while others simply grasp for directions. One only wishes the EP was extended to decent length so that material could actually breathe properly on its own accord. Stop by Vole's website to download some more of their work.
