ANGEL
Kalmukia

[Editions Mego, www.editionsmego.com]

Angel's third foray on record, "Kalmukia" is a stone-dry, overtly serious affair.  It's not how individual members play by themselves that counts, but how their unique sound bounces off other comrades in the trio.  Pan Sonic's Ilpo Vaisanen joins cellist Hildur Gudnadottir and Schneider TM's Dirk Dresselhaus for a raunchy, steadily-paced stretch into aural story-telling.  While sparse guitar riffs escape from the speakers on "Bones in the Sand", the nearly 20 minute-long title track is drenched in cello scrapes, while a blatantly gloom-heavy atmosphere looms overhead.  Music gets so dark and over-the-top dim, one has to continually check the record to ensure we're not listening to instrumental death metal.  By the time the closing "Aftermath: The Mutation" is reached, the trio settle in comfortably with an aural rendition to an imaginary movie.  If there's anything that stands out about Angel, it's their ability to plan the road ahead and tell a great story.  Neither ambient, electronic nor pure grind-core, "Kalmukia" is just that - a story well conceived, with all chapters being the perfect length and format.
