Daniel Levin Quartet
Blurry

Daniel Levin's "Some Trees" from couple years back was an ear-opener for me. Led by a cellist, here was a quartet that strove to enlighten the jazz audience with the most cinematic music imaginable. Cello isn't exactly a popular instrument in a jazz setting and vibraphone is used less and less, which leaves the trumpet and bass as the most instantly recognizable sounds on the record. Line up in his quartet remains unchanged. With trumpeter Nate Wooley, vibraphone player Matt Moran and bassist Joe Morris, he's leading a seasoned ensemble. Once again, Moran's particular striking style on his instrument is a personal highlight. The way he's running up and down his instrument reminds me of a ballerina practicing along a wooden floor. Listen to the way Morris' plucked strings play the game of tag with Moran on "209 Willard Street". Add to this soup the warm concoctions of Wooley's trumpet, which are a soothing melody to these ears. Whenever he breathes a series of tones, it sounds as if he's putting a lot of thought into the process. Without getting into any real solos, Wooley maintains a level-headed approach, playing bits and pieces of the controlled variety. Levin's sense of direction is split up according to particular themes. Each of the pieces heads of into a multitude of variations on a theme. Melodies are hinted at as each of the quartet members play off each other in tandem. Sometimes duos are allowed to form, while at other junctions, single instruments are heard for a stretch. Levin allows himself ample room to showcase the richness of his cello timbre. His arco movements are full of drama that runs a thread throughout these pieces. "Blurry" sees Levin further develop on an idea that in jazz complex playing which mixes new musical elements can lead to some really rewarding music.
