Basement Research
Live in Münster

In employing saxophonist Tony Malaby, Gebhard Ullmann has given his Basement Research project a much fuller sound.  Starting off originally with saxophonist Ellery Eskelin as a second pilot in the early 90's [check out the Soul Note "Basement Research" record from 1995], on "Live in Münster" release [which was recorded nine years ago] Ullmann's band has a tendency to wonder off into outer space.  While Malaby is incredibly adept to the leader's demanding wind machinations, it's the interaction between the two that is the biggest winner on the album.  As Ullman adeptly blows a sweet melody on the bass clarinet, Malaby gives out a cry of passion on his tenor.  Rhythm section made up of bassist Drew Gress and percussionist Phil Haynes is phenomenally agile and quick in providing a sharp contrast to the brass section.  This live album is an essential document of a project that under the auspices of New Basement Research is still a work in progress.
