Anthony Pateras / David Brown / Sean Baxter
Interference

The trio of pianist Anthony Pateras, percussionist Sean Baxter and guitarist David Brown deal in prepared sounds. These are sounds you may not easily recognize as ones originating from their chosen instruments. When asked about some of the means and methods of preparation, Dave Brown replied, "Here's a list of the utensils I prepare the guitar with or play it with: Rubber super-balls, alligator clips, found metal street-sweeper blades, animal flea comb, basting brush, makeup brush, bamboo skewers, motorized coffee frother, motorized fan, toothbrush, crochet needles, tuning forks, hair comb, plectrums, icy-pole sticks, earrings, necklace chain, e-bows, al-foil cake patties, bamboo whisks, and bicycle bells." Quite an impressive list indeed. One has to keep this in the back of one's mind when listening to the trio's music. Each minute brings with it something different, something entirely new. Baxter's percussion remains click-clickety throughout the recording [scrapes along sides of the cymbals, rubbing on the toms], while Pateras sounds as if he's using wooden blocks, metal rivets and variety of auxiliary objects that are moved along the strings of the piano. For just over 40 minutes, the three men create enough ruckus to last a lifetime. Their communal sound is filled with abstract moments of tension, drama and unresolved conflict. Mid-way through the record, one forgets there are three musicians making these sounds. The way in which they melt their common perspective is seamless. Long-form improvisation has rarely sounded this full of possibilities, this ripe with strive.
