Jamie Lidell
Jim

Imagine my surprise when I heard that on his latest album Jamie Lidell has not altered his musical direction. Following in his own footsteps, "Jim" covers much of the same ground already covered on 2005's "Multiply". What's more, his emphasis now is purely on blue-eyed soul that he brought out on his previous record. Echoes of Motown are all over the disc and best of all, he's not shy about his overt influence. What gets me each and every time about this record is just how easy it is to get into. Even if you're not into 60's soul, fact is, these constitute some tasty pop songs. "Wait for Me" drips in graceful vocals accompanied by a solid rhythm section, piano and that feel-good-all-over vibe. Gonzales does great work on the organ as usual. Back-up vocalists are tight and sweet at once [check out Peaches on the raunchy "Where d'You Go?"]. Be-bop music for the soul, the numbers get stronger as the album keeps spinning. "Hurricane" seems to stand out from the rest. With its over-the-top groove-alicious madness, it's hell-of-a number that includes some scorching "trashy" guitar from Lidell himself. A couple of ballads are included in the midst, including the sweet and lovely "All I Wanna Do" and the tender, whisper-quite "Rope of Sound", which features some amazing understated work from cellist Hildur Gudnadottir. Make no mistake, "Jim" is not a breakthrough record from Lidell. As it stands, it's a great pop record though.
