Up and Down the Lion - revised

Sitting comfortably in his "twilight" years [but wait, he's still young and brimming with energy!], doesn't mean that saxophone guru Peter Brotzmann would find any reason to slow down his creative output. These records are as fiery as anything he's ever done.
Recorded at Kampenjazz in Oslo in October 2008, "Wood Cuts" see both Brotzmann and percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love at the height of their prowess. All music is credited to both men, meaning this was a true improvised fest. Brotzmann plays loud and he plays with utter intensity. There's no stopping him when he splits the mouthpiece on his tenor. There is absolutely no denying the lyricism in his work when he picks up his bass clarinet. Sure, the passages are direct, harsh and over the top, but this is exactly what Brotzmann's work is all about. Nilssen-Love is an amazingly astute partner. He never gets left behind. His percussive flexibility enables him to keep a steady pulse one minute, while the next, he goes off on a tangent that drives Brotzmann to play in an entirely different direction altogether or to shut his playing down for a few minutes altogether. "Wood Cuts" is an incredibly astute session, one that doesn't shy away and never holds back.
Starting off the record with some accordion work from Sven-Ake Johansson, while Alexander von Schlippenbach plays trinkets on the piano, it's odd not to hear Peter Brotzmann at all until past the three minute mark. When he flares with his furious tenor assault, the impetus is thrown on the band to lay out a new path going forward. One can't believe more than three decades have passed since the recording of "Up and Down the Lion". Registered in 1979 in Sweden, now in its revised version, the record shines a light on three musicians who factored so heavily to the course of free music in Europe. I can't decide whether I like Johansson more when he's squeezing those lovely tones from his accordion or when he switches over to his drum kit [as he does on most of this record]. Regardless, the outcome is always sweet. Schlippenbach's lightning-fast execution on the ivories is only matched by Brotzmann's barrelling assaults on the reeds. Each player gets a chance to shine, but the truth is, this a true working band. They continually throw ideas at each other, which are then reciprocated and bounced around by other members. What I love the most about the trio's work here is their sense of urgency. Much of the time, they spend outdoing each other, almost as if in a 100 meter dash. "Up and Down the Lion - revised" is a rich experience that only gets better with time.
